The Odyssey of Echo Company: The 1968 Tet Offensive and the Epic Battle to Survive the Vietnam War

A powerful work of literary military history from the New York Times best-selling author of In Harm's Way and Horse Soldiers - the harrowing and redemptive account of an American army platoon fighting for survival during the Vietnam War.

On a single night, January 31, 1968, some 100,000 soldiers in the North Vietnamese Army attacked 36 cities throughout South Vietnam, hoping to topple that government and dislodge American forces. The 12 American boys of the recon platoon of the 101st Airborne Division, average age 19, are from small farms, California beach towns, and big cities like Chicago, and they are cast into a war they neither understand nor ultimately feel they can win. The fighting was hand-to-hand, nonstop, and waged in endless small battles that forged this group into a lifelong brotherhood of survivors. The Odyssey of Echo Company is about the young men who survived 60 days on the run from the enemy during the Tet Offensive, at the height of the Vietnam War.

Each young man lived 100 years in these days and came home to a country that did not understand, and didn't try to understand, what they had survived. They came home winners because they were alive but were losers for having fought there. When they arrived, they landed in San Francisco, took off their uniforms, and walked back into America, where they fell silent and realized that not many wanted to hear the remarkable story they had to tell - until now.

Based on hundreds of hours of interviews, dozens of detailed letters written to and from Echo Company soldiers, a huge trove of Pentagon after-action reports, and travel to the scenes of battle with the American soldiers and some of their Vietnamese enemy soldiers, The Odyssey of Echo Company breaks through the wall of time to tell this important story of ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances.

58,282 deaths. 304,000 wounded with 75,000 of those severely disabled. Perhaps the Vietnam War did not have to be fought, should the United States had not given in to the threats of Charles de Gaulle, following WWII, that France must have back their Indochina colony or otherwise they would join the Soviet sphere of influence. But, the war was fought and the lives of millions have been changed forever.Literature on WWII is still being written, as well as on Vietnam. New literature, in additional to historical fiction will continue to be published for years to come, as it should. Doug Stanton’s recently published “The Odyssey of Echo Company” is a powerful contribution to the literature on Vietnam. It follows Echo Company, of the 101st Airborne Division’s 1-501 Infantry Regiment’s tense deployment in 1968. More specifically it follows the journey of one young soldier, Stanley Parker, from his Gary, Indiana, home through the rice patties of Vietnam, as well as those other young men who served with him.The journey is not easy as death can come at any moment. This is not an easy book to read for those that had been there, yet it is important in trying to understand the complexity of that war and the reasons for conducting the war, both for Americans and for Vietnamese. The final chapter when Stanley Parker returns to Trung Hoa in 2014, the site of an intense battle on February 18, 1968, it becomes powerful when he meets, by accident or destiny, the VC commander that tried to kill him that day.Author Stanton has made two previous contributions to the literature of war, including the story of the sinking of the USS Indianapolis in the final days of WWII, and the story of US Special Forces working in northern Afghanistan shortly following 9-11. All three of his books are well researched and written. When this reader boarded the plane back to the United States in September 1969, he thought that he would never see Vietnam again. As fate would have it, he has been back multiple times in subsequent years for business, and grew a love for Vietnam that he did not have in 68 & 69.A final note is that the 1st Battalion, 501st Infantry (Airborne) Regiment remains in the business of killing our enemies, although no longer with the 101st Airborne Division. They have since become part of the 25th Infantry Division. This reader’s paratrooper son served two combat tours with the 1-501st in Iraq and Afghanistan. His pride in his regiment is simply reflected on his Arizona license plate, which reads 1-501. Their history lives on.

This is a true story of a young high school graduate who joins the Army right after graduation during the Vietnam war. The solider wants to go to Vietnam immediately but he is assigned to Germany because his older brother is already in Vietnam. He is transferred to Vietnam and is assigned to a recon platoon just before the Tet offensive in January 1968. His recon unit participates in heavy combat just south of the city of Hue. The descriptions of the combat are chilling recollections of how horrible war can be. The book also explains how the soldiers had to interact with the local population when at times they could not distinguish between friend or foe. After the solider, Stan, is wounded a third time he has to leave Vietnam ad gets sent back to the states on leave just before Christmas of 1967. Even on leave Stan finds it difficult to adjust to civilian life. Stan has a second military career. He and a fellow Vietnam veteran return to the country as civilians on a tour and some interesting developments occur. The book recalls how some of Stan’s fellow veterans tried to adjust to civilian life after combat in Vietnam. All of the emotions of war and trying to recover from combat are detailed in this book. If you enjoy military history and your life was some how changed by the Vietnam war, I think that you will enjoy this book. Stan Parker and his fellow recon unit soldiers are among the heroes of the Vietnam war.

Fantastic book! I admit that going into this book, I was already a Doug Stanton fan. Many years ago I read “In Harm’s Way” and it moved me as few books ever have. It was not an easy story to tell and Stanton knocked it out of the park. This new book tells a story that is also not easy to tell, because it is so visceral, and once again: total homerun. The thing about this book that surprised me so much is the deeper and more moving it becomes as you move through it.Great books of historical nonfiction have the ability to illuminate important events through the eyes of the people who lived them. This story captures the essence of the Tet Offensive, the experience of a platoon, the Vietnam War as a whole, and what America was experiencing during these years, through a singular character, Stanley Parker, who endures so much during this book you would think he has super powers. I think a lot of comparisons to Tim O’Brien’s The Things They Carried will come up because Stanton’s choice of detail is so effective. He makes you feel like you’re experiencing these events yourself. Thank you God you’re not, because the story is harrowing.Whenever I finish an excellent book I can’t stop thinking about it. Which is probably why I am writing this review…

A Hero's journey is a standard myth by which to understand the mind and psyche of a soldier returning from war. Not so for Vietnam Vets. Having fought an extremely unpopular war that divided the country, their reception was disrespectful, unappreciative, disdainful and even hateful. Vietnam Vets were denied the respect, appreciation, acceptance and understanding accorded heroes of war. They have been silenced and isolated, unable to tell their stories and be accepted and respected for who they have become through these experiences. In Oddessey, Doug Stanton opens our eyes, ears and hearts to these wounded and uresolved heroes who risked their lives on our behalf by serving our country. Every American should read Oddessey to thoroughly understand the nature and extent of this gaping wound lingering in our society and how to accept responsibility and personally help to heal it.
