Through My Eyes, a gentle read, reminds me I need to try harder to understand the challenges those face who become part of this great land.I am reminded we should be less insistent to be a melting pot and more supportive in seeing our country viewed as a mosaic. The Zamzams in our midst often need just a little caring on our part. They are afterall just children. Each new understanding of those from other cultures makes a small difference in the challenge for us to be a welcoming people; to give people a chance to live the good life we all want. This story can help.those with a heart to grow in this worthy effort.
This does much to give a voice to our local Somali community. In some ways they are different, in most ways the same. Buy it for insight, or even simply to support an author who has undertaken an urgently relevant effort to promote understanding between cultures.
Very simplistic story that does little to allay the fears who are opposed to a massive influx of refugees into their community. It does not examine the ieconomic plight of the refugee who is brought to a community with as federal eag e subsidy and who is cut loose sheen the federal dollars run out. It does not examine the impact on the community. It portrays all refugee children as members of single parent matriarchal families who are highly educated in their own language and with parents who think all Americans are rtch. This is a feel good book that does little to help. It does provide some overdraft insight into Somasli culture such as henna tattooing but I am afraid it hurts more than it helps with its lecturing tone
I loved this educational, fiction story about a young girl from Somalia who struggles with a big move to the United States. It is a heartwarming story that is must read for all kids.
I love the book. I read many times. Tammy's book is a great tool and rich source for schools.
A delightful read! I highly recommend this book for teachers as well as students. The book opens your eyes to what children go through upon entering a new country and a new school community.
This book is by far one of the best written to build an understanding of the refugee experience. Tammy shows great compassion in her writing and draws the reader in with an exceptionally written story.
First I would like to thank the author who put the time and effort to write this book not for business but more importantly to share her experience with others who didn't have the opportunity. Yes, others will make judgemental statement about the content of this book but I will encourage everyone to understand the message. Nowadays people get their information from various sources but what you hear from a personal experience is different from what you hear or get from a news outlet. The Author's message is from a personal experience and its worth understanding her message before our biases gets in the way.
